Every day, thousands of plastic bottles are opened in the Riviera Maya. Many end up in the sea, on beaches or tangled in the mangroves we take you to see. That is why, on every tour with our cooperative, single-use plastic bottles are not allowed.
It is a simple rule, and it works.

How It Works
At our palapa in Muyil there is a purified water station. Visitors fill their own reusable bottles before getting on the boat or the kayak, and again after the tour. Purified water is included in all our experiences; the only thing we ask is that you bring your own bottle.
If you forget, tell us. We would rather help you find a solution than see another plastic bottle in the reserve.
Why Plastic Matters Here
Sian Ka’an protects lagoons, wetlands, mangroves and part of the Mesoamerican reef. Plastic breaks into smaller and smaller pieces but never disappears. It is eaten by fish and birds, it traps turtles and it collects in the roots of mangroves, the same roots that shelter young fish.
Our cooperative organises monthly beach clean-ups and see first-hand how much plastic the sea brings back. Preventing it from entering the reserve in the first place is the easiest way to help.

What Else Is Not Allowed (and Why)
Plastic bottles are one of several rules that protect the reserve and the experience:
- Regular sunscreen: many chemical filters harm aquatic life. Use biodegradable sunscreen, a hat and long sleeves.
- Drones: they disturb wildlife and are not permitted.
- Smoking and vaping: fire risk and litter.
- Alcohol and drugs: for your safety on the water.
None of these rules are meant to make the day harder. They are what allows the lagoons to stay clear enough to float in.
What to Bring Instead
- A reusable water bottle (or two on hot days).
- Biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent.
- A hat, sunglasses and a light long-sleeve shirt.
- Swimwear, a towel and a change of clothes.
- A small dry bag for your phone.

Small Habits, Big Difference
Choosing a tour that refuses plastic bottles is one of the easiest ways to travel more responsibly in the Riviera Maya. If you want to learn how to tell real responsible tourism from marketing, read our seven questions to spot greenwashing.
When you join the Ancient Canal Tour, the kayak tour or the Muyil Sacred Mayan Immersion, your bottle comes with you and goes home with you. The lagoon stays as clear as you found it.
