Sian Ka’an Tours from Akumal & Half Moon Bay (Pickup Explained)

Akumal means “place of the turtles” in Maya, and most visitors never leave the bay. But the same coast that gives you turtles at breakfast puts a UNESCO biosphere within an hour of your door. Here is how a Sian Ka’an tour from Akumal works — including the pickup rule that trips people up.

The Distance

Akumal to the Muyil entrance of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is about 45 minutes by car on Highway 307 — closer than Playa del Carmen, further than Tulum. Half Moon Bay, Aventuras Akumal and South Akumal are all within the same pickup zone.

The Pickup Rule, Plainly

Akumal counts as outside Tulum. On the 6:00 a.m. departures — Ancient Canal, Muyil Immersion, Kayak — you add round-trip transportation at checkout for $320 MXN per person. On the Midday Ancient Canal (10:00 a.m.) it is already included in the price, with no extra charge. If you would rather not set a 5 a.m. alarm, the Midday option was designed for you.

Which Tour Suits an Akumal Stay

Ancient Canal Midday — transportation included, ages 4+, back before dinner. The easy answer.

Muyil Sacred Mayan Immersion — if ruins move you more than swimming time.

Kayak — earliest start, best value, ages 12+.

Bird Watching and Sacred Caribbean Paradise are self-arrival: fine if you have a rental car, which many Akumal guests do.

Beyond the Turtles

Akumal’s bay is turtle habitat under real pressure — go at opening, keep your distance, never touch, and use reef-safe sunscreen or none. Then give a day to the lagoons: a different ecosystem entirely, and the one that feeds the reef your turtles live on. Our wildlife guide covers what lives where.

A Day From Akumal (Midday Option)

9:00 pickup at your Akumal hotel or condo. 10:00 arrive at the palapa in Muyil; entry fee paid on site. 10:45 boat across the lagoons. 12:00 float the ancient canal. 14:00 traditional Maya lunch. 16:00 head north. 17:00 back in Akumal.
