Sian Ka’an in November: Weather, Water and What You’ll See

If you ask our captains which months they enjoy most on the lagoons, many will mention November. The heavy rains of autumn are fading, the air feels a little fresher, the migratory birds are back and the holiday crowds have not yet arrived. November is one of the quiet treasures of the year in Sian Ka’an.

Weather in November

November marks the transition from the rainy season to the drier months. Days are warm and sunny more often than not, with afternoon temperatures usually around the high 20s Celsius. Short showers are still possible, especially early in the month, and occasional cold fronts from the north, called nortes, can bring wind, clouds and cooler evenings for a day or two.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30, and by this time of year strong storms are much less frequent than in September and October.

The Water

With fewer storms, the lagoons often settle and become clearer. On calm mornings the water of Muyil Lagoon looks like glass. On windy days, especially during a norte, the open lagoons can be choppy. Our captains adapt the route for safety, and our tours run rain or shine unless conditions are unsafe.

Wildlife and Birds

November is a rewarding month for birders. Migratory species from North America have arrived and join the residents, so walks on the community trails are lively. On the lagoons, herons, egrets, cormorants and ospreys are common. Manatees and crocodiles may appear in Capelchén Lagoon, but as always, sightings are possible and never guaranteed.

Crowds and Booking

November is busier than September and October, but still calmer than mid-December to early January. Small groups are easy to arrange, and you can usually book a few days ahead. If you are travelling during the American Thanksgiving week, book earlier.
