Sian Ka’an Tours from Tulum: 20 Minutes to Another World

Tulum is the closest town on Earth to a UNESCO World Heritage biosphere, and most visitors never make the twenty-minute drive. A Sian Ka’an tour from Tulum gets you into 1.3 million acres of lagoons, mangrove channels and Maya history before most of the beach zone has finished breakfast. Here is exactly how it works, from the cooperative that runs the boats.

Without a Car

Colectivos leave Tulum for Felipe Carrillo Puerto all day and can drop you at the Muyil entrance for a few dollars — but not at the dock, and the ride back is a gamble in the afternoon. If you are car-free, take a tour with pickup included; it costs less than the taxi you would need anyway.

What a Day Looks Like

6:00 pickup at your Tulum hotel. 6:40 arrive at the palapa in Muyil; welcome and entry fee. 7:15 boat across the Muyil and Chunyaxché lagoons. 8:30 float the ancient canal. 11:00 jungle walk or archaeological zone. 13:00 traditional lunch cooked by cooperative families. 14:30 back on the road. 15:00 Tulum.
