When visitors write to us after a day in Sian Ka’an, they often mention the colour of the water, the float or the temple. But almost as often, they mention the captain. The person at the back of the boat who seemed to know where every bird was hiding. Who slowed down before anyone saw the crocodile. Who made the whole day feel safe.
Our captains are the people who know these lagoons best. They have spent years reading the water of Sian Ka’an, learning its channels, its winds and its animals, and that experience is what makes a day on the water feel easy.

What a Captain Does Before You Arrive
By the time you reach the dock in Muyil, the captain has already been at work. Boats are checked and cleaned, fuel is measured, life vests are counted and laid out. The captain reads the morning: wind direction, cloud, the level of the lagoon. On the coast, conditions can change quickly, and that early reading decides the safest route of the day.
Each boat carries up to six visitors. On larger groups we use two boats with two captains and one guide, so the experience stays calm and personal.
Reading the Water
The lagoons of Sian Ka’an are shallow in many places, with sandbars, seagrass and mangrove roots just below the surface. Navigating them is a skill learned over years. Our captains know which channels are deep enough in the dry season, where the current pulls near Xlapak, and how the wind changes the water near Boca Paila.
They also know the animals. They know where pelicans roost, which banks crocodiles prefer and where, in Capelchén Lagoon, it is worth turning the engine off and waiting in silence for a manatee.

Safety First, Always
Every visitor wears a life vest on the water, and every boarding is assisted. Captains decide when to slow down, where to stop and when conditions are not right. That authority matters: our tours run rain or shine, but if the water is unsafe, the route is adjusted. Read our honest guide to whether Sian Ka’an is worth it for more on what to expect.
Part of a Maya Cooperative
Our captains work with a Maya cooperative, not with an outside company. The income from your tour stays in the region, supporting families, conservation work and training. You can read how this model works in our article on the Maya cooperative model.

Meet Them on the Water
Every one of our boat experiences is led by these captains: the full-day Ancient Canal Tour, the Muyil Sacred Mayan Immersion and the afternoon Sacred Caribbean Paradise. Book directly with the cooperative and you will meet them at the Muyil dock, ready to show you their lagoons.
