There are three ways into the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, and only one of them is easy. This is the honest breakdown of how to get to Sian Ka’an — including the road that eats rental cars and the entrance most visitors should actually use.
Option 1 · Muyil / Chunyaxché (the one to choose)
Drive time: 20 min from Tulum · 1 hr from Playa del Carmen · 2 hrs from Cancún.
Road: Highway 307, paved, signposted.
What is there: the lagoons, the ancient Maya canal, the Muyil archaeological zone and the cooperative’s dock.
Parking is free at the entrance. Every Community Tours Sian Ka’an experience departs from here. If you have one day, this is the answer.
Option 2 · Boca Paila coastal road (only if you know what you are doing)
South from Tulum’s hotel zone, through the reserve arch and on toward Punta Allen. Unpaved, deeply potholed, 2–3 hours in the dry and worse after rain. Compact rental cars regularly break here, insurance often excludes the damage, and there is no fuel and almost no signal. Spectacular for expedition travellers with a high-clearance 4×4 and a full day; a bad idea for anyone else.
Option 3 · The southern approach
From Felipe Carrillo Puerto toward Punta Herrero — remote, slow, for people who want the reserve to themselves and have days rather than hours.
Without a Car
Colectivo: Tulum → Felipe Carrillo Puerto colectivos pass the Muyil entrance and cost a few dollars. They drop you on the highway, not at the dock, and flagging one down in the afternoon is a gamble.
Taxi: works from Tulum, but the return leg is the problem — and the round trip usually costs more than adding transportation to a tour.
Tour with pickup: our 6:00 a.m. departures include pickup within Tulum; from outside Tulum add round-trip transportation for $320 MXN per person, or take the Midday Ancient Canal, which includes it from the whole corridor.
What You Pay at the Entrance
The federal fee is approximately $225 MXN (US$14) per person, in cash, paid at the cooperative’s palapa. It is not included in any tour price anywhere and goes directly to conservation of the reserve.
When to Arrive
Early. The lagoon is glass before 9 a.m., wildlife is active, and the light is better for photographs. By midday the wind picks up and the water loses its mirror.

Colectivos from Tulum toward Felipe Carrillo Puerto pass the Muyil entrance, but they leave you on the highway and the return is unreliable. A tour with pickup is usually cheaper than a round-trip taxi.
How much does it cost to enter Sian Ka’an?
